10/23/2020..OPELOUSAS, LA – Sheza Freighttrain T was the fastest qualifier for the $475,851 LQHBA Sale Futurity (RG1) from the trials run three weeks ago at Evangeline Downs and she was sent off as a strong 2-5 favorite on Thursday night. She was beaten to the punch early in the Final, however, as A Double Corona started strongly and rolled to an upset victory by 1-1/2 lengths. A Double Corona set a new track record for the 350-yard distance at Evangeline Downs with a final time of 17.196 seconds, which equals a speed index of 105.
A Double Corona was sent off at odds of 16-1 and paid $35 to win, $6.60 to place and $5 to show. Sheza Freighttrain T returned $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show, while Fast Dashin Diamond finished third and paid $3.80 to show.
GELDING SETS NEW TRACK RECORD FOR THE 350 YARD DISTANCE AT EVANGELINE DOWNS
A Double Corona was bred by part-owner Bobby Barnett in Louisiana. The 2-year-old gelding is owned by Barnett and Tommy Hays, trained by Jose Sanchez III and was ridden to victory by Eddie Sanchez. A Double Corona is by Open Me A Corona and is out of the Dashin Bye mare, Corona Dashin Bye. The win was his second in four lifetime starts and the $214,132 first-place purse increases his career earnings to $225,732.
The $40,000 LQHBA Sale Juvenile also featured horses from the trials that were run for the LQHBA Sale Futurity on October 1 and the winner was Jess Sweet Time, who covered the 350 yards in 17.517 seconds, which equals a speed index of 95.
Jess Sweet Time won at odds of 5-2 and paid $7.60 to win, $4 to place and $3.60 to show. Shortstop Express finished second and returned $3.40 to place and $3.40 to show, while a 48-1 longshot, Tttroyalityntheblood, ran third and paid $16 to show.
Jess Sweet Time was bred in Louisiana by James C. Sistrunk. The 2-year-old gelding is owned by Roland Frederick, Cory Mouton and Trey Ellis. Ellis is also the trainer of Jess Sweet Time, who was ridden to victory by Juan Garcia, Jr. Jess Sweet Time is by One Sweet Jess and is out of the Game Patriot mare, Track Shaker. The win was his second from seven career starts and the $24,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $43,170.
The $35,000 French Quarter Stakes was settled by the start as Hh Gailforce broke forwardly and carried that momentum all the way to a victory by a neck over Speedy Piloto Gee. She finished the 330 yards in a time of 16.418 seconds, which equals a speed index of 103.
Hh Gailforce was sent off at 7-2 and returned $9.60 to win, $5.40 to place and $4.20 to show. Speedy Piloto Gee paid $5.80 to place and $4.80 to show, while a 32-1 longshot, Escandalo, was third and paid $11.20 to show.
Hh Gailforce was bred in Louisiana by Harvey Hayes. The 3-year-old filly is owned by the Egoizzta Partnership, trained by Joel Cantu and was ridden by Luis Ruiz. She is by Freighttrain B and is out of the First Prize Perry mare, Open My Prize. The victory was her fourth from 11 starts and the $21,000 first-place purse moves her lifetime earnings to $229,747.
The $30,000 Lakeview Dash resulted in a minor upset as a 9-1 shot, Peytons Last Dash, closed sharply to prevail over The Cazador by a neck. Peytons Last Dash covered the 250 yards in 12.985 seconds, which equals a speed index of 115.
Peytons Last Dash paid $20.80 to win, $7.80 to place and $3.40 to show. The Cazador finished second and paid $3.60 to place and $2.10 to show, while the even-money favorite, Mag 1, ran third and returned $2.20 to show.
Peytons Last Dash was bred in Louisiana by Jo Baya Foreman. The 4-year-old gelding is owned by Rosendo Valdez and trained by Rosendo Valdez, Jr. David Alvarez was aboard on Thursday night. Peytons Last Dash is by Heza Fast Dash and is out of the Game Patriot mare, Im Game Lets Play. The win was his sixth from 12 lifetime starts and the $18,000 first-place purse moves his career earnings to $71,370.
The 2018 LQHBA Louisiana Million winner, Mpshinning, returned to the scene of that triumph with a resounding victory in the $40,000 Mid City Stakes (RG2). He broke sharply from the rail post position and never looked back, coasting to a 1-1/2 length victory in a time of 21.499 for the 440 yards, equaling a speed index of 107.
Mpshinning was sent off as the 6-5 betting favorite and paid $4.40 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.60 to show. Tuckers Prize finished second and paid $8.40 to place and $4.40 to show, while Barjaxs returned $3.60 to show.
Mpshinning was bred in Louisiana by Jon and Donna McPherson. The 4-year-old horse is owned by Larry J. Boudreaux, trained by Adrian Huitron and was ridden by Everardo Rodriguez. He is by Mr. Piloto and is out of the First To Shine mare, Shinningperrydash. The victory was his 10th in 20 lifetime starts and the $24,000 first-place purse makes his career earnings $785,045.
The $25,000 Faubourg St. John Stakes was rescheduled from October 10, when racing at Evangeline Downs was cancelled due to the impact from Hurricane Delta on the area. Canselman didn’t mind the delay at all as the gelding wore down his competition in the stretch and defeated 10-1 longshot, Jessi Jam and Louisana Dressblues by two lengths. The final time for the 870 yards was 46.166 seconds, which equals a speed index of 93.
Canselman won at odds of 2-1 and paid $6.80 to win, $4.60 to place and $2.60 to show. Jessi Jam returned $6.40 to place and $2.80 to show, while Louisiana Dressblues paid $2.20 to show.
Canselman was bred in California by Dr. Steve D. Burns. The 4-year-old gelding is owned by Miguel A. Vargas, trained by Rosendo Valdez, Jr. and was ridden to victory by Luciano Duenez. Canselman is by Favorite Cartel and is out of the Separtist mare, Fall For It. The win on Thursday was his seventh in 15 lifetime starts and the $15,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $61,450.
