10/30/2021..Evangeline Downs..OPELOUSAS, LA – Rogelio Marquez, Jr.’s San Lorenzeaux rocketed to a track record in the $382,415 LQHBA Sales Futurity (RG1) at Evangeline Downs Saturday night. The futurity final was the featured event on a beautiful Saturday night that also included the Races and Aces and French Quarter Stakes.
With jockey Raul Ramirez, Jr. in the irons, San Lorenzeaux jumped out of the gate on top and left little doubt as to the outcome. The fastest qualifier in the trials, San Lorenzeaux set a new mark of 17.204 seconds for the distance of 350 yards and earned a speed index of 105, eclipsing the old record time of 17.235 seconds set by Dashin Brown Streak in 2014. Left in the wake of the impressive performance was the previously undefeated Blood Money and Amazing Blood, who both ran well, but were no match for the winner.
The Hector Alcala runner was 1-1/2 lengths clear at the wire. Blood Money was another 1-3/4 lengths ahead of Amazing Blood, that runner a neck better than Stratosphear. The race was for Louisiana-bred 2-year-olds and was contested over a fast track.
San Lorenzeaux earned $172,087 in the victory, his first stakes win and third from five career starts. His career bankroll now stands at $326,533.
Bred in Louisiana by Kenneth Garcia, the 2-year-old bay gelding is by Carters Cartel, out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Scoopie Coochie. San Lorenzeaux was a $29,000 purchase at the LQHBA 2020 Yearling Sale.
San Lorenzeaux paid $4.00 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show as the second choice in the wagering. Favored Blood Money returned $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Longshot Amazing Blood returned backers $7.80 to show.
EYEONDAPRIZE CAPTURES THRILLING FRENCH QUARTER STAKES
Rosendo Valdez’s Eyeondaprize was up in the final yards to win the $35,000 French Quarter Stakes. The race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up was contested at the distance of 330 yards.
Breaking a step slower than Sheza Freighttrain T, jockey Everardo Rodriguez got his charge in gear and was able up in the final yards. Five Bar Miracles was also in with a chance the entire trip. The winning margin for Eyeondaprize was a head, with Sheza Freighttrain T a neck better than Five Bar Miracles.
Running for Rosendo Valdez, Jr., Eyeondaprize completed the distance in 16.558 seconds and earned a speed index of 98.
Eyeondaprize earned $21,000 for the win, her seventh victory from 18 career starts. Her lifetime bankroll increases to $110,160.
Bred in Louisiana by Daniel R. Trahan, the 4-year-old brown mare is by Fast Prize Jordan out of the Game Patriot mare Good Game Meg.
Eyeondaprize returned $6.20 for the win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Wagering favorite Sheza Freighttrain T paid $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Five Bar Miracles returned $3.80 to show.
Paul Daigle’s Jess Louisiana Boo parlayed a ground saving trip into a hard-fought victory in the $35,000 Races and Aces. The race for Louisiana bred 3-year-olds and up was contested over the distance of 870 yards.
Breaking from the inside post under jockey C.J. McMahon, Jess Louisiana Boo was in a four-horse skirmish in the run through the turn. Midnight Biscuit, No Key Needed and Freighttrain Z were all heads apart in the early mix with the eventual winner. Jess Louisiana Boo was able to shake free inside the 220-yard marker and edged away from his rivals.
The winning margin for the Phillip Calais, Jr. trained Jess Louisiana Boo was 3/4-lengths over Midnight Biscuit. Freakin Patriot Dash was another 1-1/2 lengths back while rallying for third.
The winning time for the 870 yards was 46.367 seconds. The time equates to a speed index of 90.
Jess Louisiana Boo earned $21,000 for the third win of his career from 15 starts. The winner’s share bumped his career earnings to $73,580.
